The Hazelton Cross-Country Ski Society has started our first community grooming program this winter of 2023-2024.
Users can enjoy both skate skiing and classic skiing on our ski tracks as the grooming includes both a corduroy track and a trackset.
We groomed a track at Hazelton Secondary School over the month of January, but have paused the grooming program there for now due to the snow loss during the heat spell in January.
We have also been grooming a track at Gitxsan Wet'suwet'en Education Society School (GWES). The snow base at GWES has survived the weeks of snow loss, and the grooming program there has continued into February.
The children and youth of our region have opportunities to cross-country ski as four schools in our region have fleets of cross-country skis and three schools have active in-school cross-country ski programs. The Hazelton Cross-Country Ski Society hopes that our efforts to provide groomed cross-country ski trails around the community will contribute to kindling the growth of cross-country skiing in our community.
Bringing cross-country ski grooming to our community could not have happened without generous support from our volunteers and financial support from a variety of organizations including the Bulkley Valley Credit Union, Bulkley Valley Community Fund, Rec Sites and Trails BC, Pretium, KSM, Hy-Tech Drilling, Apex Diamond Drilling, and All West Glass.
